Imo shards are really great if you get them cheap as a non laser weapon empire. The weapon system in this game is rock/paper/scissor and armor counters ballistics and missiles quite well. If your enemy is using huge amounts of armor having an easy way to get decent laser weapons (which shards really are) can be quite useful. Whatever strength you killed it at in Ensign difficulty will probably be sufficient. I’d recommend 40k-50k just to guarantee it, and make sure to fit your ships to counter Shard.
